Two connected schools serve more than 900 students in grades K through 5th. Our collaborative design process produced a plan for the site they share, and includes a wealth of habitats and microclimates accessible from every door. Pathways, trees, log seats, and nooks and crannies for play among natural elements will transform the paved recess yard. There are council rings and a lookout for classes; arbors and vines provide shade and leafy views; sidewalks expand into comfortable entry plazas where parents gather and wait for pick-up and drop-off. Policy recommendations include traffic calming… trees at the street edge signal to drivers that this is special territory; new crosswalks and barriers enable classes to cross the driveway safely for “field trips” into the woods and wetland.
