When we design for children, we first look at present conditions and ask, what is going on here? We need to understand present conditions in order to know how to plan to extend children’s investigations in the outdoors. Key questions for children and teachers include:
“Where is the water and where does it go?
Where and when is it sunny, and is there enough shade?
Where is there habitat, and what animals and plants live here?
Together we ask, “What is working well and should be left alone? “What needs to be managed differently or restored to a different condition?” The design grows out of the answers to these questions and the developmental needs of the children.
